My Philosophy:

People Are Powerful And With The Right Mindset, Tools, And Actions Can Accomplish Anything.

I've Got A Story Too...

Here's the deal.  I've been at the starting line just like you.  And I want to share my story with you below.  However if you just want the facts, certs, and awards, you can jump to the bottom.

You won't hurt my feelings (very much:).

Ever Been Called A "Before Picture"...

.....I have.  I was in my early 20s living a life of college freedom.  No more high school football games, no more 3-hour practices, no more two-a-days (2 practices in one day), no more weight room, no more wind sprints, power bounding, or plyo boxes.  In other words, no more routine.  Just me and my roommate in our 800 square-foot apartment.  I could do what I want, eat what I want, stay out as late as I want, and live like I want.  Ultimate freedom....right?

I remember my first ah-ha moment as clear as day. I was kicked back on the couch with a paper plate of pizza perfectly placed on my pooch.  The game was on, I had pizza, I had beer, life was good.  Then it happened. My ah-ha moment that had been lurking jumped out from the shadows viciously and sank its teeth into me.

A commercial came on for Cybergenics from GNC.  If you're over 40, you probably remember these commercials with the "before and after" photos of people that had transformed their bodies using the program.  Enter my ah-ha moment.  A set of photos appeared on the screen of a young man about my age.  At that moment, my roommate exclaimed, " look like that guy's before picture!"  This is where the record scratches and everything comes to a screeching halt.

What????  I look like that guy's "before picture"?  What is he talking about?  To his defense, he was just trying to say that I looked like the guy...but not the chiseled, fit, lean, god-like version in the "after picture."  No...I was the plumpy, marshmellowy, full-faced, belly out to here version of the guy.  I was his "before picture."

I sat in silence for just a moment, set my pizza down, and slowly made my way to the bathroom mirror.  Closing the door behind me, I turned sideways and reluctantly glanced at my profile in the mirror.  Oh my! Where did this belly come from?  When did my face get so full?  Where did that lean, muscular football player go?  The vicious monster from the shadows had knocked off my blinders when it jumped from the shadows.  I had ignored the signs - going up 3 pant sizes, losing my breath going up the stairs, taking up more space in pictures.  But with blinders off, I could see clearly now. I was indeed a "before" picture; I needed a transformation.

Why I Do What I Do...

Immediately after my ah-ha moment, I decided to do something about it.  But what?  I didn't know anything about working out on my own.  I didn't know anything about proper nutrition.  I didn't know where to start or where to go.  I got it!  I will go on this ridiculous crash diet that had me taking in just 900 calories a day.  Yes...just 900 calories.  That's the solution.  So I followed the plan for 3 months knowing there is no way I can live this way; it's not sustainable.  And I'm miserable.  But the weight was dropping off and hey...that was the important thing, right??

Three months later, I had dinner with my sister. Casually she expressed her concern for my health.  She said, "Mike, are you alright?  You look a little emaciated."  You've got to be kidding me!  I've gone from a "before picture" to emaciated?  How in the world am I going to get this right?

So I started educating myself.

Not a lot of internet back then, so I bought books and studied at the library. I learned about macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients - how much I needed for my goals, my age, my gender, my body type, and my activity level.  More importantly, I learned WHY I needed these amounts. I studied bio-mechanics of exercise, proper exercise programming, the systems of the body, you name it.  This was also the period of time that I started my journey on proper mindset, re-programming belief systems, the connection between mind and body.

The result - I transformed.

I remember thinking to myself, "Everyone should know this.  Everyone deserves the chance to live a life free from crash diets, free from not knowing, and free from crippling mindsets."  I was in my last year of business school, and I decided I no longer wanted to pour drinks as a bartender.  I wanted to have a positive impact on people.  I wanted to serve others that were struggling like I was in the "not knowing" zone.  I wanted to help others transform their minds, bodies, and lives.  So I started down my new path - fitness.

In my last year of school, I studied for my first personal training certification on slow nights at the bar.  Think Tom Cruise in Cocktail (at least I do).  Sure I was still going to graduate business school and go put on a suit and tie for corporate America, but I would spend this last year impacting as many lives as I could as a personal trainer.

Fate would see things differently.  Once I got into the world of fitness serving others, I never looked back.  I fell in love with coaching people.  I started my own fitness company, created some award-winning programs, and have now had the opportunity to help guide thousands of men and women on their fitness journeys.

And you know what?  I love seeing people transform their lives.

So Why Am I Serving 40 And Older...

I'll keep this part short and to the point.  I'm over 40.  And at the moment I'm typing this, I'm feeling mentally and physically at my best.  But I wasn't too long ago.  You see, 40+ me is different from 20+ me.  I have a wife, two children, more responsibility, less time on my hands, and to top it all off my body responds differently now to food and exercise than it did for 20+ me.  In other words, I'm a different version of myself than I was 20 years ago.

And would you believe that somebody that dedicated his life to fitness had to experience "ah-ha moment" #2?  You better believe it; because I did.  Even as a "fitness guy", I let some positive habits slip away, my body reacted differently to food, I let some negative mindsets in, and I found myself out-of-shape again.

I had to re-tool what I already knew for 40+ me.  So you know what?  I did, it worked, and the best part about it is that it's doable, it's livable, it's enjoyable, it's sustainable, and it's a fitness lifestyle.  I dropped 50 lbs after 40 doing it the healthy way, and I'm now back in the best shape of my life.

I do what I do for 40+ men and women because we share the same station in life.  We face the same struggles, challenges, time constraints, and mindsets.  Sure each one of us has a different story, but we can relate to one another.  We share a common bond of having lived some life at this point, and we understand how it can mold you without your permission.  But it doesn't have to be that way.  We have the power to mold our lives the way we see fit.

So 40+ me wants to take the same path as 20+ me.  I want to serve you.  I want to make your goals my goals.  I want to share with you my experience, knowledge, and expertise on balance between mind, body, and life after 40.  I want to walk hand-in-hand with you on your journey to freedom and living a fitness lifestyle at this very station of life.

Here's what I wholeheartedly believe.

People are powerful...YOU are powerful!  And I've made it my mission to help as many people as I can experience this power to transform.  I believe that with the right mindset, tools, and actions, people can accomplish anything.  YOU can accomplish anything.  You can transform your mind, body, and life.  You can experience true, ultimate freedom.  You can live a sustainable fitness lifestyle.  You most certainly can.  Believe it.

My Core Beliefs:

1) People Are Powerful.  You Are Powerful!

Every single one of us has the tools we need inside of us to make change happen.  We have the power to learn, to grow, and to transform.  Stored inside you, they are simply potential.  Utilizing them is what makes you powerful.

2) Your Mind Is Your Most Powerful Tool.

Belief is the fuel for action, and action is the vehicle that drives you forward down the road of success.  A faulty belief system leads to inaction.  And inaction keeps you stalled right where you are.  Belief=Action=Success!

3)  You Are Unique And Require A Unique And Personal Plan.

The fitness industry is filled with "cookie cutter" diets and workout plans mass produced for the takers.  However, you are unique and deserve and require a specific plan with you at the center - your goals, your challenges, your body type, your nutrient needs, and your capabilities.

4) Your Past Experiences Don't Dictate Your Future.

It does not matter what you've tried in the past, what the results were, where your mindset was, what you said to yourself, or what anyone else thought about your journey.  None of that defines you nor does it affect where you are going.  Right now marks a new starting point.

5)  Your Environment Equals Your Energy.

What we surround ourselves with is crucial to our success on any journey worth taking.  From social circles, social media, and even the food we keep in the house, negative environments breed negative results.  So it's important to surround yourself with an environment that supports you.

6)  Fitness Is Not About Being Perfect.

Nobody is perfect.  We all have our own imperfections.  But here's the good news.  Getting the results that you desire and living a fitness lifestyle is not about being perfect.  It's about planning around your imperfections.

7)  Change Happens In The Grey Area.

We tend to think in absolutes such as BLACK or WHITE, or ON or OFF.   We either hit the gym 7 days a week for 2 hours, or we don't go at all.  The truth is that most success happens in the in between - the GREY area.  That's where we should operate, and that is where change happens!

8)  Sustainability Is The Number One Key To Your Success.

If you take a temporary approach to your fitness (meaning it's not sustainable), then your results will be temporary.  However the opposite is true.  If you take a permanent approach, your results will also be permanent.   It's simple.  You have to ask yourself, "Can I live this way?"  If the answer is "yes", it's a sustainable lifestyle approach.

9)  Everyone Can Benefit From A Coach.

Even elite athletes, business geniuses, and those at the top of their game strive for the next level.  Working with a coach gives us the opportunity to see things we might not have seen in ourselves, introduce new ideas, and practice new strategies to better ourselves from the inside out.

10)  Small, Bite-Sized Steps Lead To Lasting Change.

We've been taught in the past that MASSIVE ACTION leads to change.  It does not.  This old-school way of thinking is not sustainable (remember #8 above?).  When we take small steps, it's doable.  And because it's doable, we keep doing it.  And when we keep doing it over-and-over again, we form habits.  We create a lifestyle of fitness.
